This regulation applies to all buildings, with the exception of detached one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses up to three floors. The use of fire walls to separate buildings is now confined to determining suitable construction types based on allowable building space and height. When an elevator hoistway door opens onto a fire-resistant corridor, the aperture must be secured in order to prevent smoke intrusion into the hoistway.
